The Cross Movie is a documentary that was released in 2009. Matthew Crouch directed the film in his debut as a director. It chronicles the 38,000 mile journey of Arthur Blessitt, who made the Guinness Book of World Records when he set out to cover the aforementioned mileage, without the benefit of a motor vehicle, carrying a 12 foot wooden cross. His objective was to present the gospel to every nation and major island group across the globe.
Arthur Blessitt and Matthew Crouch had met twenty years prior to the film being released. The 2 men had another chance meeting in June of 2008, as Blessitt was on his way to Zanzibar, Africa. It was then that the idea came to Crouch to make a documentary that with highlight the entire story, including each facet of Blessitt's walk.
Arthur Blessitt's story essentially began with what he refers to as a simple act of obedience to God: making a giant cross to adorn the wall of "His Place", the latter of which was a Christian coffee house he founded in Hollywood, California in the 1960s. In 1968, he began taking short trips with the cross along the Sunset Strip, for the purpose of feeding the homeless and sharing the gospel.
Blessitt quickly began feeling as if God was telling him to take a similar walk, only this time throughout the entire country. He left Hollywood shortly after, and started a journey that would lead as far as New York City and Washington DC. It began in 1969 on Christmas Day.
The next year, he walked through war-torn Northern Ireland. It was this trip that started what was soon to be called the walk through the world. In 1988, again feeling led of God, he continued his journey until he had walked through every nation possible spreading the gospel. Ten years after this was accomplished, his mission was complete, and he had even gained entrance to North Korea through an outstanding series of circumstances.
In summer of 2008, the aforementioned documentary film was completed. His wife assisted director Matthew Crouch, as she had been with her husband in over 290 of the countries he visited during the walk. To this day, the journey is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as "The longest walk in the world".
The movie gives a personal account of Blessitt's trip through 315 countries, territories, and island groups. The distance he walked, which was specifically 38,102 miles, is equivalent to circling the globe over one and a half times at its equator. The movie has been received well by both Christians and non-Christians alike, and truly showcases the dedication and beliefs of Arthur Blessitt and his family.
Additionally, the film highlights numerous conversations with people to whom Blessitt spoke with during his walk. On various occasions, he journeyed in utter solitude, while on other days large groups of individuals gathered to greet him in specific areas. The journey took him to many war-torn, troubled parts of the globe. However, regardless of the circumstances he faced, he never considered abandoning his plans. The Cross Movie was released in select theaters, and can now be bought on DVD online or from various retailers.
